Better known as the Green Card Lottery or the Visa Lottery, the Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) program allows certain foreign nationals to register for a chance to apply for a U.S. immigrant visa. And registration is free.
Historically, DV Lottery Program eligibility requirements have included:
1. **Nativity:** Eligibility is generally based on the applicant’s country of birth. The DV Lottery aims to diversify the immigrant population in the U.S., so countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. over the past five years are not eligible. The list of eligible countries can change each year.
2. **Education or Work Experience:** Typically, to be eligible for the DV Lottery, an applicant needs at least a high school education or its equivalent OR two years of work experience in the past five years in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience to perform.
3. **No Ineligibility Grounds:** Applicants should not be inadmissible to the U.S. Grounds for inadmissibility include certain health-related grounds, criminal records, security and terrorist concerns, public charge (likelihood of becoming dependent on U.S. government for subsistence), and other miscellaneous grounds.
4. **Other Requirements:** Depending on the year, there might be additional requirements or considerations, such as a valid passport at the time of entry.
It’s also crucial for applicants to complete the DV Lottery application form correctly and follow the instructions diligently, as errors can lead to disqualification.
Remember, these are general guidelines. Specific requirements or changes for the 2025 DV program or any other year should be confirmed through official sources.
